Welcome

Hi there!

We’re the BuzzBeez, an FLL robotics team made up of three energetic teens eager to help our community while learning about our country’s best pollinators–bees!

Interesting facts about bees and their hives…

  • A typical beehive can make up to 400 pounds of honey per year.
  • Honeys bees never sleep
  • Honey never spoils
  • It would take only one ounce of honey to fuel a honeybee’s flight around the world.
  • Honeybees have 5 eyes, 3 small ones on the top of their head, and 2 big ones in front. They also have hair on their eyes!
  • Honey is the ONLY food that contains all the substances necessary to sustain life, including water.
  • Honey is made 80% sugar, 20% water.
  • A single honeybee will produce approximately 1/12 teaspoon of honey in their lifetime.
  • To make one pound of honey requires the lifetime work of approximately 768 bees. The bees in the colony must visit 2 million flowers and fly over 55,000 total miles.
  • Out of 20,000 species of bees, only 4 make honey.
  • In one day, a bee can fly 12 miles and visit as many as 10,000 flowers.
  • One bite out of every 3 bites of food we enjoy would not exist if bees did not pollinate our food.

  1. I am always talking to my girls about the importance of bees. We don’t have any hives, but have several around us. We make sure to plant plenty of plants to help them out and they are always very busy from spring to late fall!
